Recently, the technology of autonomous ships has been developed in various countries around the world, and some projects have been conducting demonstrations at sea. Along with the progress of the technology, it became necessary to examine legal problems to realise the operation of autonomous ships. However, legal consideration on autonomous ships, especially regarding civil liability, has not been sufficiently addressed.

The following is an article by Mr Ryoichi Kasahara, attorney-at-law at our corporation, published in Maritime Law Review (Kaijiho Kenkyu kaishi) No. 250 (February 2021), which discusses civil liability in the ship collision with autonomous(unmanned) ships.
