Japanese Civil Code was recently reformed and new provisions with respect to standard form contracts have been introduced into the Code. Narabu Ito of our office discusses an influence of the same law reform upon the current bill of lading transactions in the below paper.

This paper was originally written for WaveLength No 62 (March 2017) published by The Japan Shipping Exchange, Inc. Although the Civil Code Reform Bill had been still under the deliberation at the House of Representatives when the paper was completed, the Bill was thereafter passed without amendment on 26 May 2017, which is scheduled to come into force on 1 April 2020.
